How can old LCD display components be reused?

In a project run by Chalmers Industriteknik (CIT) studies are made on recycling products with LCD displays, such as televisions, mobile phones and computers. Boid´s task was to examine how components in LCD screens can be reused to create new products and thereby prolong component life cycle.

04. Solution

Thin lighting applications

Boid produced concrete examples and conceptual product design studies of how LCD screen components can be used in different lighting situations. Main focus has been on the backlight unit and the optical films that the unit consist of. The various films have basically no material value because they are made from common plastics. Though, due to the components’ relatively advanced manufacturing methods and performance, the component value is very high. This means that the recycling of LCD screens should concentrate more on reuse instead of recycling or incineration.

Unique lighting solution for offices and conference rooms made from reused LCD-screens.

The combination of two technologies, LCD components and LED light sources, leads to sustainable development from several perspectives:

– Reuse of LCD components instead of incineration
– Low power consumption and more efficient lighting
– Design flexibility through the possibility to construct extremely flat luminaries

When turned of the luminaire is transparent which gives a unique expression. When lit, the transparent surface becomes the light source. Light spreads downward over the working area, but also upward and generates indirect light, which is desirable in general lighting situations.
